Cash or card in Morocco: what to plan before you travel

Morocco's currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Cards can be useful, but acceptance differs by business, so a traveler should not assume every payment will work the same way. Plan how you will access cash, check fees with your bank and ask each provider which methods it accepts before you leave.

What the official travel guidance says

The Moroccan National Tourist Office identifies the dirham as the local currency and says travelers can pay by cash or card. Its travel formalities guidance says international Visa or Mastercard cards are accepted by most hotels and by some restaurants, shops and petrol stations. That is not a promise for any particular business. Ask before you rely on a card, especially for a small purchase or a service arranged directly with a provider.

Plan access to cash without guessing an amount

The tourism office says exchange facilities are available in airports, some hotels, banks and city exchange offices, and that ATMs are widespread. Decide how you will get dirhams for your first day and for places where card payment is unavailable. The amount you need depends on your route, accommodation and activities; this guide does not give a universal cash budget. Ask your own bank about international withdrawals, card limits, exchange handling and any fees before travel.

Ask each provider what and when you will pay

For a hotel, excursion, restaurant or transport booking, check the specific provider's accepted methods, currency, timing and any deposit rule. A card accepted at one hotel does not establish the policy of another service. Keep a copy of the agreed quote or booking terms. For a transfer, provide the route, date, passengers and luggage so the provider can quote the actual journey; our private transfer checklist explains the details to confirm.

Our confirmed Marrakech airport pickup terms

For Marrakech airport pickups with Transport Morocco Tour, no deposit is required; customers pay on arrival by cash or bank card. The driver meets the traveler in the arrivals area with a name sign. The final price and arrangements are agreed before the booking is confirmed. These terms concern airport pickup and should not be assumed for every city-to-city transfer, tour or other business.

A short payment checklist for first-time visitors

  • Check whether your cards are enabled for international use and ask your bank about limits and fees.
  • Plan a way to obtain dirhams for purchases where cards are not accepted.
  • Ask each accommodation and activity provider which payment methods it takes.
  • Confirm the final currency, amount and payment timing in writing for booked services.
  • Keep more than one way to access funds, in case a card or ATM is unavailable.

Exchange rates and provider terms change, so consult your bank and the provider close to your travel date. For the transport part of your route, our Morocco transfer page explains how to request a personal quote.

Build a payment plan for each part of the trip

A single answer to ?cash or card?? is less useful than checking each purchase. Keep a short list with three columns: the service or purchase, the provider?s accepted method, and when payment is due. Complete it for accommodation, intercity travel, excursions and everyday spending before departure.

  • Before departure: Ask your bank about overseas card use and withdrawals; ask each booked provider for its payment terms in writing.
  • On arrival: Decide how you will obtain local currency for the first day without assuming every small purchase accepts a card.
  • Before changing cities: Recheck how the next accommodation and transport provider will be paid, especially if you will be away from a major city.

Do not treat a provider?s policy as a countrywide rule. Our confirmed Marrakech airport pickup terms are one specific example, not a policy for every tour or transfer.

Frequently asked payment questions

Can I travel with only a card? Card acceptance is not universal; plan access to local cash and check each provider. Is there one fixed exchange rate to use for planning? No. Check the current rate and your bank's actual charges. Does a WhatsApp quote request require payment? Requesting a quote is not a confirmed booking; ask about the payment terms that apply to the specific service before confirming.
