Morocco Travel Guide

Marrakech or Fes: which city fits your first Morocco trip?

Marrakech and Fes both reward time in their historic centres, but they work differently as a first base. Marrakech connects naturally with the published excursions on this site; Fes can anchor an itinerary through northern Morocco or toward the Sahara. The better choice depends on your flights, interests and how much time you want to spend moving between places.

Choose by the experience you want most

Marrakech: The Moroccan National Tourist Office highlights Jemaa el-Fna, the souks, gardens and the contrast between the medina and newer districts. If your priority is a city stay with a choice of published day trips, Marrakech is a practical base for Essaouira, Ourika, Ouzoud and other excursions. Fes: The tourism office emphasizes its historic medina, craft traditions and city heritage. Give the medina time rather than treating Fes as a quick stop between transfers.

Think about the days around your city stay

From Marrakech, an Essaouira outing or overnight stay changes how you handle luggage and accommodation. An Atlas valley excursion is different again from a mountain trek; choose by the activity, not only the photo. From Fes, the Tangier–Chefchaouen–Fes route offers a northern planning frame. A published Fes-to-Marrakech Sahara route is another, more travel-intensive choice. These are separate plans, not day trips from a single Fes hotel.

Let flights and route direction settle the decision

Before choosing the first city, write down your arrival airport, departure airport and number of nights. If both flights are through Marrakech, adding Fes means arranging an onward journey and a return or different departure. If your trip begins in Fes and ends in Marrakech, examine a one-way route before booking accommodation. The Morocco planning guide helps you place the first and last travel days. Ask the provider for current transport options and realistic timing for your dates; this comparison does not promise a fixed journey time.

If you can visit both

Two cities can make sense when you have enough nights to explore each rather than arriving late and leaving early. Decide whether the trip is mainly about city time, a northern route or a Sahara crossing. Then check the actual sequence and transport between stays. Our seven-day route guide shows one published Casablanca-to-Marrakech itinerary that includes Fes; it is not a requirement for every visitor.

A decision checklist

  • Which city's sights and activities interest you more?
  • Where are your arrival and departure airports?
  • Do you want day trips from one base or a route changing hotels?
  • How much time remains after travel between cities?
  • Would a guided city visit, free time, or both suit you?

Neither city is universally the better first stop. Match the city to the journey you can actually take, then reserve the connecting transport separately where needed.
